Small Front Garden Re-Design

As our client embarked on a series of home improvements, it became evident that her front garden was not living up to the charm of her property. Described as scruffy and uninteresting, the garden needed a makeover to match the elegance of her home. Our task was clear: to transform the small front garden into an inviting entrance that complemented the client's property enhancements.

Garden Elements:

The Challenge Ahead

Transforming a lacklustre front garden into a welcoming entrance posed several challenges. The existing garden lacked charm and functionality, with poor lawn quality and an irregular shape. Our goal was to overcome these obstacles and create a space that not only enhanced the property's curb appeal but also provided clear and inviting access pathways for visitors.

Design Brief

Given the straightforward nature of the client's request, our task was clear: remove the poor lawn and redesign the garden to create a more inviting entrance. The key requirement was to provide clear access pathways from the driveway and pavement to the front door, ensuring visitors felt welcomed and guided.

Haywood Landscape’s Approach

Functional Accessibility

We prioritised easy and clear access pathways, designing the garden layout around this central requirement to ensure visitors felt invited to the preferred entrance.

Symmetrical Harmony

Addressing the awkward irregular shape and diagonal slope of the garden, we introduced a simple geometric design to create symmetry and balance. Low retaining walls were constructed to level the main area, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

Strategic Planting

A matching pair of specimen grasses were strategically planted to reinforce symmetry, while bold and simple planting choices disguised the irregular shape and defined the garden space. This created a sense of separation from the public footway and street.

The Results

The transformation of the small front garden exceeded expectations, turning a previously unimpressive space into a source of pride for the homeowner. By embracing functionality, symmetry, and strategic planting, we created a welcoming and visually appealing entrance that complemented the client's home improvements.

To complete the transformation the client was fortunate to benefit from the removal of a rather ugly telegraph pole which sat right on the edge of her garden, a happy coincidence that now shows off her front garden to best effect !

A traditional country garden

Making the most of the natural beauty of the Kent countryside, a traditional country garden should reflect its outlying landscape character. Lending itself to a free-flowing, informal planting scheme, the more traditional rural landscape design will often feature wildflowers, natural water, some kitchen and cottage garden elements, and softer themes.

A Modern Garden for Outdoor Living

As is often the case, when you move home, the garden you take on may not reflect your style or needs; it may be bigger or have elements that simply do not fit with your plans for enjoying your outdoor space. This was exactly the dilemma facing our clients near Faversham as they took on an awkward-shaped sloping garden...

A Family Garden

With no existing features or character to guide the design, new-build homes with ‘blank Canvas’ plots can sometimes be more challenging to design than a more mature garden. This particular example was sloping across its entire depth and featured poor heavy clay soil. It was also an irregular awkward shape, producing lots of additional challenges.

A Seaside Garden

Separated from the beach only by a quiet road and with a commanding view across the English Channel, this fine property in Deal was let down by the garden. With a massively overgrown rockery and dilapidated crazy paving their coastal garden design was very dated, in a poor state, and completely unmanageable for our clients who are an elderly couple. They wanted us to come up with some suitable seaside garden ideas that would transform their garden.
