The Garden ‘Pre-Transformation’

Traditional Country Garden Transformation

Our client's 17th Century oak-framed house nestled amidst the picturesque Kent countryside lacked a garden that reflected its natural beauty. Seeking to enhance their outdoor space, they turned to Haywood Landscapes to create a traditional country garden that harmonised with its rustic surroundings.

Garden Elements:

The Challenge Ahead

The existing garden was a plain expanse of lawn, lacking personality and features, overlooking Kent's blackcurrant fields. The homeowners desired a transformation that captured the essence of the rural landscape while providing secluded areas for relaxation and entertainment.

Garden Design Brief

The clients envisioned hidden garden spaces, a natural pond with a water cascade, and seating areas infused with year-round colour and texture. Emphasising a natural and traditional palette, they sought a design that complemented the local vernacular and seamlessly integrated with the surrounding farmland.

Haywood Landscape’s Approach

Understanding The Vision

Through thorough discussions, we captured the client's vision, emphasising secluded garden areas and integrating natural elements to reflect the rural landscape character.

Listening, Interpreting, and Translating

Careful consideration was given to material selection and design elements, ensuring they aligned with the client's brief and budget while respecting the landscape's natural beauty.

Soft and Informal Planting

Palette distinct garden areas were created, featuring a variety of plants chosen for their colour, form, and texture. From wildflower meadows to waterside plantings, every detail was crafted to draw the eye and enhance the garden's natural charm.

The Results

The transformed garden surpassed expectations, offering a serene retreat that seamlessly blended with its countryside surroundings. From the tranquil pond to the softly terraced landscape, every aspect of the design reflected the client's vision and delighted both homeowners and passersby alike.

“We did not fully appreciate how a professional garden design could bring us such ever-changing beauty every day. Neighbours and passers-by often stop to admire the garden, wanting to talk about our experience, taking photos and asking who created it. Whilst we would love to take the credit, it is clearly Andy’s vision, design and supportive team who must take the applause!”

Comments From Co-Founder of Haywood Landscapes, Andy Wiggins
“This was quite a challenging project, dealing with everything the English weather could throw at us over three months or so, but so rewarding for myself and the team on-site to have created such an idyllic space that sits so well in its rural surroundings”.

An Informal Garden

A Creative Drainage Solution

We were asked to specify and quote for the installation of a land drainage system for a large garden that routinely flooded in the winter. The soil was deep, heavy clay in a flat low-lying area with nowhere to drain to. We proposed a more creative solution:

A traditional country garden

Making the most of the natural beauty of the Kent countryside, a traditional country garden should reflect its outlying landscape character. Lending itself to a free-flowing, informal planting scheme, the more traditional rural landscape design will often feature wildflowers, natural water, some kitchen and cottage garden elements, and softer themes.

A Modern Garden for Outdoor Living

As is often the case, when you move home, the garden you take on may not reflect your style or needs; it may be bigger or have elements that simply do not fit with your plans for enjoying your outdoor space. This was exactly the dilemma facing our clients near Faversham as they took on an awkward-shaped sloping garden...

An Overlooked Garden Transformed

With a property on a large new-build development our clients were blessed with a relatively large garden, but it was set on a hillside and had an awful outlook towards tall fences, timber retaining walls and properties ‘up-slope’ looming over them.

A Family Garden

With no existing features or character to guide the design, new-build homes with ‘blank Canvas’ plots can sometimes be more challenging to design than a more mature garden. This particular example was sloping across its entire depth and featured poor heavy clay soil. It was also an irregular awkward shape, producing lots of additional challenges.

A Seaside Garden

Separated from the beach only by a quiet road and with a commanding view across the English Channel, this fine property in Deal was let down by the garden. With a massively overgrown rockery and dilapidated crazy paving their coastal garden design was very dated, in a poor state, and completely unmanageable for our clients who are an elderly couple. They wanted us to come up with some suitable seaside garden ideas that would transform their garden.
