Coastal Garden Redesign Project

Nestled in the coastal town of Deal, this property boasted stunning views across the English Channel, yet its garden failed to capture the charm of its surroundings. Overgrown rockeries and dilapidated paving marred the landscape, presenting a daunting task for the elderly couple who called it home. Eager for a change, they sought our expertise to breathe new life into their seaside sanctuary.

Garden Elements:

The Challenge Ahead

Transforming a neglected garden into a tranquil coastal retreat posed several challenges. The overgrown rockeries and dilapidated paving required extensive clearing and the coastal location demanded a design that could withstand the harsh seaside conditions - while enhancing the property's imposing facade.

Garden Design Brief

Commissioned in early April 2013, our mission was to comprehensively clear the neglected garden and then create a coastal garden design that would complement the property's seaside location while providing low-maintenance beauty.

Haywood Landscape’s Approach

Clearing and Levelling

The first step involved removing approximately 50 tonnes of ragstone rock and soil from the overgrown rockery, expanding the garden's usable space. We then levelled the terrain, revealing the charming flint walls that lined framed the property garden.

Enhanced Access

The existing terrace and steps were refurbished and a new patio and path built. Alternating panels of natural sandstone and clay brick were laid created arresting detail and interest.

Thoughtful Planting Scheme

We designed a planting scheme tailored to the coastal microclimate, selecting plants for year-round interest and resilience to the dry soil conditions and salt laden winds. The addition of pebbles enhanced the seaside aesthetic and reduced the need for frequent maintenance, providing the couple with a hassle-free garden retreat.

The Results

By mid-August, the transformation was complete. The newly revitalised garden, with its expansive terrace and sea-inspired elements, now offers the perfect setting for the couple to relax and rewind. Delighted with the results, they enjoy spending time on the terrace, admiring their seaside garden while watching the ships sail by.

Exactly what we had in mind. Our seaside garden design is Inspirational. Terrific, superb, Ideal for elderly people. The terrace is a really nice feature.

A Modern Garden for Outdoor Living

As is often the case, when you move home, the garden you take on may not reflect your style or needs; it may be bigger or have elements that simply do not fit with your plans for enjoying your outdoor space. This was exactly the dilemma facing our clients near Faversham as they took on an awkward-shaped sloping garden...

A traditional country garden

Making the most of the natural beauty of the Kent countryside, a traditional country garden should reflect its outlying landscape character. Lending itself to a free-flowing, informal planting scheme, the more traditional rural landscape design will often feature wildflowers, natural water, some kitchen and cottage garden elements, and softer themes.

A Family Garden

With no existing features or character to guide the design, new-build homes with ‘blank Canvas’ plots can sometimes be more challenging to design than a more mature garden. A Seaside Garden

Separated from the beach only by a quiet road and with a commanding view across the English Channel, this fine property in Deal was let down by the garden. With a massively overgrown rockery and dilapidated crazy paving their coastal garden design was very dated, in a poor state, and completely unmanageable for our clients who are an elderly couple. They wanted us to come up with some suitable seaside garden ideas that would transform their garden.
